📋 What You'll Learn
  • The real difference between AZ-900 and AZ-104 in terms of depth and job impact
  • Who should start with AZ-900 and who can skip straight to AZ-104
  • The complete Azure certification path from Fundamentals to Expert
  • How long each certification takes and what to study
  • Which certification has better ROI for your career stage

This is probably the most common question I get from IT professionals across the GCC — especially from network engineers, system administrators and IT managers who want to move into cloud. And the answer isn't as simple as "start with AZ-900." Let me give you an honest breakdown based on training 4,500+ professionals across 14+ countries.

What Is AZ-900 (Azure Fundamentals)?

AZ-900 is Microsoft's entry-level cloud certification. It covers cloud concepts, core Azure services, security, compliance, privacy and Azure pricing and support models. It's designed for people who are new to cloud — business analysts, project managers, IT support staff, salespeople or anyone who wants to understand what Azure is without managing it directly.

AZ-900 is a non-technical overview exam. You don't configure anything. You don't build anything. You learn about Azure services at a conceptual level. The exam takes 45 minutes and most candidates pass it with 1–2 weeks of self-study.

AZ-900 Exam Facts: 40–60 questions · 45 minutes · Passing score: 700/1000 · Cost: $165 USD · No prerequisites · Validity: Does not expire (fundamental cert)

What Is AZ-104 (Azure Administrator)?

AZ-104 is Microsoft's associate-level administrator certification. It's a serious technical exam that requires hands-on skills with Azure Portal, PowerShell, Azure CLI, ARM templates and Bicep. You need to actually manage Azure environments — not just know what they are.

AZ-104 covers: identity and access management (Entra ID, RBAC), virtual networking (VNets, NSGs, load balancers, VPN gateways), compute (VMs, App Service, Azure Kubernetes basics), storage management, monitoring (Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Alerts) and governance (policies, locks, cost management, tags).

This is the certification that opens the door to real cloud job roles: Azure Administrator, Cloud Operations Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure Engineer. It typically requires 4–8 weeks of dedicated study after a bootcamp, assuming you have an IT background.

Who Should Start With AZ-900?

Start with AZ-900 if you:

  • Are completely new to IT or cloud (no networking, server or infrastructure background)
  • Are in a business, sales, project management or non-technical role who needs cloud literacy
  • Want to understand what your organization's Azure environment does without managing it
  • Need a quick win and formal certification before moving into deeper technical training
  • Are required by your employer or training program to start with fundamentals
✅ My Recommendation

If you already have 2+ years of IT experience (networking, Windows Server, Linux, virtualization), skip AZ-900 and go straight to AZ-104. AZ-900 will feel very slow and won't significantly add to your skill set. The time you spend on AZ-900 could be used studying AZ-104 fundamentals instead.

Who Should Skip AZ-900 and Go Straight to AZ-104?

Skip AZ-900 and go directly to AZ-104 if you:

  • Have experience with Windows Server, Active Directory, networking (TCP/IP, VLANs, firewalls)
  • Have VMware, Hyper-V or any virtualization experience
  • Are currently working in IT operations, infrastructure or systems administration
  • Have already taken other cloud certifications (AWS, GCP, CCNA, CCNP)
  • Are an IT manager who has been supervising cloud projects and wants formal certification

In my experience training thousands of IT professionals across the GCC, about 70% of candidates who start with AZ-900 wish they had gone straight to AZ-104. The concepts in AZ-900 are covered in the first few days of AZ-104 training anyway.

The Full Microsoft Azure Certification Roadmap

Understanding where AZ-900 and AZ-104 fit in the broader Azure certification landscape helps you plan your 12–24 month career roadmap:

How Long Does Each Take to Prepare?

CertificationStudy Time (After Bootcamp)Recommended Path
AZ-9001–2 weeks self-study1-day workshop → self-study → exam
AZ-1044–8 weeks4-day bootcamp → labs → practice tests → exam
AZ-5004–6 weeks after AZ-1044-day bootcamp → labs → exam
AZ-3056–10 weeks after AZ-1044-day bootcamp → architecture practice → exam
SC-1008–12 weeks after AZ-5004-day bootcamp → case study practice → exam

My Final Answer: Which Should You Start With?

If you're new to IT (less than 1 year experience): Start with AZ-900. Build the conceptual foundation, get your first Microsoft certification, then progress to AZ-104 within 3–6 months.

If you have 2+ years of IT experience: Skip AZ-900 entirely. Book a 4-day AZ-104 bootcamp. The AZ-104 curriculum covers everything you need to know about Azure fundamentals as part of the training — no separate AZ-900 prep required.

If you want the fastest path to an Azure job role: AZ-104 is the minimum viable certification for any technical Azure role. Employers in the GCC specifically look for AZ-104 or higher on resumes. AZ-900 alone will rarely get you an interview for an Azure role.

⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid

Many candidates spend 3 months collecting AZ-900, AI-900, SC-900 and DP-900 "Fundamentals" badges. While these look nice on LinkedIn, employers rarely differentiate between them in hiring decisions. One AZ-104 is worth more than four fundamentals certifications combined in terms of career impact.
